Polynesian Navigation animations

Here are some of the animations created by the Year 5&6 Extension group. In Term 2 they have been learning about ancient Polynesian navigation techniques. The early Polynesians were skilled navigators and used signposts from nature to help them navigate their way around the Pacific Ocean to find land.

Inquiry Research - Early Navigators

This term the theme is called 'I like your Latitude'. The Year 5&6 Extension group have been doing some research around Polynesian navigation techniques as well as looking at other explorers such as the Vikings. The students were put into six teams: Pacific Navigators, Vikings, Explorers, Modern Sailors, Pilots and Astronauts. Each team had to find out information about their topic and share their knowledge and understanding at the Paideia Seminar held at the end of the term. Here is some of their research.

40 Hour Famine Team 2019

On Friday 7th of June our 40 Hour Famine Team camped out at Pt England School for our annual 40 Hr Famine sleepover. Students were placed into four teams and were given 45 minutes to practice a dance that they would later perform in the hall. The items were fantastic and kept our minds off food for a while.

Later on, the students played games, blogged about their experience and watched a movie. All money raised will be sent to World Vision who organise the 40 Hour Famine. As our students are quite young they only participate in a 20 Hour Famine. The money raised will go towards helping children and families from South Sudan who have fled their country and are living in refugee camps in Uganda.

This experience was a reminder of how fortunate we are to be living in such a beautiful and safe country. It was also a reminder for our students to be grateful for what they have and to think of others less fortunate than themselves.

Special thanks to Haare Kutia, Wylma Erick and Stevenson Erick for their help.

Visit to the eel tank with Mr Vogt

The Year 5&6 Extension group was very lucky to have visits from two eel experts Dave Cooper and Mahu (Ngati Paoa) this term. We are grateful to Mr Vogt for organising these visits as it relates to our inquiry for the term. Mr Vogt was also present for both visits to introduce our guests and to help direct student learning. The visit to our school eel tank was definitely a highlight for the Extension group.

This movie shows highlights from the Year 5&6 Extension group visit to the eel tank for the second time this term with Mr Vogt and Mahu.
