Mr Telea's Tatau - by Jordenne

This term we have been learning about ‘Art’. So in extension we have been studying about symbols, and mostly island patterns and designs. One of the studies were the Samoan ‘Tatau’, meaning the Samoan Pe’a for mens.

So not long ago, Mr Tele’a (Mrs Tele’as husband) came in and showed us his Pe’a. We had a lot of questions that had been answered. One of the questions that were said was ‘‘Did you get to choose the style of how you wanted the tatau?’’ Mr Tele’a said no because the tattooist looks at your background and gets all the information there. So the info that the artist got from his background is permanently on Mr Tele’as body.

For his tatau, it took more than 1 week, it took 17 sessions. So basically it was 17 days. We asked him “What inspired him to get it?”. His answer was, that his brother was wanting to get a tatau, but he needed a partner. So Mr Tele’a bravely volunteered to be his brother soa (tattoo partner). The tattooist that did Mr Tele’as and his brothers Tatau was Tuifa’asisiga Su’a.

Mr Tele’a said that when he unravelled the pe’a and put it on a paper. It will look just like a bat. One of the symbols on the Tatau is at the back. It is the va’a (boat), the representative of the va’a is the mans family. So you have to protect them under your arms, it is really cool because the va’a is right under your arms. It is around your back on the ribcage. Another desing on the Tatau was on the belly button. Mr Tele’a said it was a relief when the tattooist were up to the belly button because it was that last part to tattoo.

When getting a Tatau, you need to be respectful. You cannot show your pe’a when it is still getting done, because that is rude. But if the pe’a wasn’t finished and you just gave up. You will be walking around with an incomplete tatau, and I tell you it won't be good, because you will be living in shame.

I have learnt so many things about the Tatau that I didn’t even know. Like how the tattooist looks at your background to get ideas for your pe’a. It takes really long to do your Tatau, and also one thing I am really surprised with is that he memorises everything in his head, he doesn’t copy off a paper. It is all on his mind. Also that the Tatau is very special to the Samoans.

Inspired by Robyn Lamont - artist

This term the Year 8s are using the art of Robyn Lamont to help inspire their artworks. Robyn is originally from South Africa but now lives in Auckland, New Zealand. Our Year 8s have been fortunate enough to actually meet the artist in real life. Helen from our class created an artwork inspired by Robyn and was lucky enough to have a photo with her.

You can learn more about the art of Robyn Lamont on her website:

Year 8 Camp by Antonio

In the weekend, I got my gear ready and packed my bags so that I can go on a camp up the line at Whangarei. It's near a little community of Marsden and is a peaceful and tranquilizing place to live. We went there and spent 4 days experiencing the awesome activities like, the flying fox, the home made waterslide, kayaking and archery, we also had fun memories playing volley ball.

When I was on my way to Pt England, I was really excited to be out of Auckland. Finally I got dropped off to school I waved my mum goodbye, and saw my friend Lukis. We walked with each other to the hall so we can get called our group names and to meet up with everyone. My name got called out and I was in the group Ruakaka B. I saw plenty of my other friends and was excited that all the boys were gonna kickback and hangout also bond like brothers.

We were on our way, I waved at all the mums and teachers watching us lift off. This was gonna be a week to remember. The journey took close to about 2-3 hours in total from Auckland ,G.I Pt England to Whangarei Marsden Bay Camp. But there was a twist, we went for an hours bush walk through a very hard, muddy and huffing and puffing course. I stayed in the back for most of the time, then as we went further I went further to the front.

Finally the Course had come to an end and I was really happy it was. We went for little morning tea then went on a 30 minute walk ahead to a beach. We had free time, we could go for a swim in the very cold water, look for mussels, play at the rocks, build sand stuff or just enjoy the sun. I went for a swim then went and buried myself so I could look like a mermaid. It was time to go to the real action at camp.

We finally arrived at camp and unloaded all the bags and gear. I was amazed at how clean and fun it looked. Then the owner, took us on a very cool tour around the camp site. I saw the flying fox and the water slide they may have been the only highlights at camp. Then we got to go to our awesome cabins and have free time and most of the Yr8’s showered. I was In Frankie, Logan, Texas and Lukis' cabin.

It was time to experience my first afternoon at camp, I went to volleyball. I really loved volley because the court was entirely sand! I never knew I had a lot skill at volleyball, then I went on the deck and hanged out and played songs on the guitar. Shortly after that, we had dinner and dessert and the food was delicious and great tasting. Then we have 30 minutes free time and then meet back at the deck. We played games, and sang songs then shortly after that it was sleep time.

On the next day we got a surprise, all of the boys had to run around the field at 6 in the morning! It was freezing like 100 bags of Ice Cubes all around my feet. After that hard run, my foot felt very numb, then we got ready for breakfast. We had a good day planned and I was very happy, we had to pack our lunch and get our day pack. Our first activity was archery, I was a beginner so it was difficult. I never got a any of the targets and I failed. And to top it off, it started raining above us.

Our second activity was an indoor activity, so we had to get dried up before we could continue. So, we had the cooking challenge which was when we have to start a fire and make eggs and marshmallows, the old fashioned way. When we started, WE had received an orange between two. The aim, was to make poached eggs using the orange’s, in a fire. So we had to scoop the insides of the orange and use that as an bowl for our eggs to cook in. We foiled our babies, then we cooked them inside the centre of the burning fire. After a while, I got my one out and ate my poached egg and it was really delicious.

After eating that delicious poached egg, we made another meal, a marshmallow with 2 thin biscuits as buns for your marshmallow sandwiches. We had to first cook the marshmallow until its fully brown, then put the two biscuits on each side. Sadly my Marshmallows always turned out to be black. I was really full and I was happy we had free time. I played basketball in the hall with my friends. I never knew I had skills at basketball too. Lastly our last activity was kayaking at a lake not far from camp.

At kayaking, we got some advice from one of the helpers about kayaking and the boundaries at the lake. We got in our kayaks and went down the river, our helper asked us if we wanted a race around, I looked back and everyone had left and couldn't handle the cold rain. I came first and I never knew I had skill at kayaking too. I helped pack away the kayaks and I was freezing cold. I got my gear and left the lake and walked back to the camp base.

I got back to school and had a rinse off and dried up for lunch. Lunch was another amazing meal. After that, I got our stuff and showered. I finally was warm and I was happy that we had free time. Sadly it was raining which meant that the sand on the Volleyball court and I was sad but luckily the movie room was open. I stayed and played with all my friends, we went on the piano and I waited patiently for dinner and dessert. We had another great meal and another tasty dessert and I was very full on the very yum food. The movie had started, we got to get our sleeping bags and pillows.

The movie was about a person who had to save his schools music class. He needed to get $4,000 to help save the music programme. He didn't have any ideas for cash, so he joined cage fighting. He started off as a noob but as he trained, trained and trained. So he worked his way up into the professional fighting. He got organised a fight at UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) So hes won and saved his school music programme. Overall I thought it was an great movie, so did the others.

On the last day We had to go surf ed and learn some Surfing skill at a beach out of marsden. I was really paying attention and learnt a lot of stuff. On the last Night we had to Go to a camp fire and perform group performances. We sang songs and We were all happy. On the last day we went to waiwera and spent the day there its a pool function. I went home and was happy to see my sister and family.

Class 2 Celtic Knot designs

In week one of term 4 the class was given a task to create Celtic knot art designs. They had to form a group of three and then proceed to design an artwork with Maori or Pacific patterns. Some chose to be more creative and design original images. Check out their results.

Iron - Tattoo designs

This tattoo I drew myself represents the teuila which is the flower. I drew this because it represents my culture and it really nice and easy to draw.
Now this photo here that I drew is actually suppose to be around the arm or leg. Its also a Samoan tattoo that I like and I wish to get it one day I grow up!
Last but not least, this tattoo is meant to be tattooed on the leg. It also inspired me because it represents my culture. This is also a little bit too much so I would never get it!

The mind and Body by Iisa

Explanation Writing

The body is an amazing thing. It is an essential part of you. Without it you’d be as dead as a rock. It helps you keep healthy when you’re sick, keeps the blood flowing when you have fun, allows you to inhale and exhale oxygen and stay alive.

Once you reach adulthood, you will have reached full potential. It takes 7 years to finish going through puberty, and when you are at the top, well, you’d be an adult! In that stage your hormones will start kicking into action.

When you are little, you aren’t using much of your brain. You're only using a bit. But as you grow older, You will use more and more parts of the brain like the Cortex, the spot that helps you make decisions. When you are around 20 years of age, You will use nearly all of your brain.

But if you take drugs for example, it will damage your brain permanently. It will also affect your body, making all of your reactions slow down. It will affect your memory, so you can’t remember your past. And sometimes it will give you sudden mood swings. And soon it will be hard to stop, as most of the time your body will suffer dreadfully without it.

Usually another price that comes with drugs is that you will lose your future. If you could go somewhere with something that you do, and you go on drugs, you could lose your chance forever. You may be chased down by the cops, being controlled by a drug dealer, or just suffering. It’s not the best idea to go on these. It’s not water, or food.

Also, eat healthy food. We’ve all heard that many times before. Healthy food is good for you. For example: If you eat tomatoes, you will have a reduced chance of getting cancer. Beetroot increases the amount of iron in your blood, and carrots help with your vision. So don’t always eat unhealthy food, have some good food every once in a while.

Water is a must for keeping your body alright. Having soda all the time is bad for keeping balance in your body. All the sugar in the soda can damage your teeth. So not only should you not take soda regularly, but brush your teeth so they don’t get broken, or so you won’t have infected gums.

If you have an infection, it’s best to tell someone right away, rather than leave it. It will most likely get worse, and can sometimes lead to blood poisoning, or losing a limb. Doctors are always a good idea to help cure infections, and so is ointment. Do not leave serious infections to chance. That is a dangerous decision that puts you in lots of risk.

So take good care of your body. It is an amazing and precious pal, the best you’ll ever have. You can ask a rock to find out what it’s like without a body. Or maybe you can take real good care of yours. Don’t throw it all away. You only have one chance, so make the most of it. Kia Kaha.

Music by Neo

What is Music?

Music is one of the most delicate things in life. It can help you with most things you could think of. Music has a way of going deep inside your emotions. In todays world, we sometimes use technology to make music.

Types of music.

Every type of music has developed from scratch since the medieval ages to this day. For example, late 19th century - 20th century. Blues, originated from the Southern United States by the African American folks in the late 19th century. Dubstep, emerged from the late 1990  and originates from the United Kingdom.

The impact from music.

It is always good to listen to music. It sets the mood for you to relax, but don’t push yourself to the limit of the volume or Your inner ear will be damaged and your ability to hear will be disabled. But on the other hand, music is the best thing you can listen to when you're feeling down

Instruments.

You have to love instruments, a place without instruments is not negotiable for anyone in this world. Learning how to play instruments will help you with your thinking ability and your smarts. Main instruments like the guitar, piano, and the violin is what I would recommend for beginners.

Music is very important, important as life, and if you already know the knowledge of music and you already know how to play a musical instrument, keep practising till the end

School Immersion Assembly Term 2 - by Texas

Term 2!! Welcome back Point England. Well this year is different because we have a new topic to learn about. I think for the intermediate block our theme is Sound. I like sound because we can listen to music or make instrumental beats.

This morning we had have an team assembly. At the beginning of a new term we have a team assembly which gives the teachers a chance to do something on the stage to show us some of the topic we are learning about. Walking into the hall there were helium balloons attached to the ground and most of the teachers were wearing costumes and headphones on their head. Mr Burt had worn an funky dress which kids thought that he was a clown, but he wasn't a clown. As Mr Burt was talking team 1 was getting ready to go on the stage.

Team 1 had a movie about the zoo, animals was mostly seen in the movie. Team 2 was up on the stage that was performing about planes and we got to watch the song that was playing on the stage. The teachers were doing some funny moments. As we were getting on to team 3 the performance was about lights, colours and speed of light. It was like a rainbow but the teachers wearing costumes.

Team 4 was up on the stage that had diving gear, fishing gear and treats to give away. To get some treats you have to answer a question's.Mr Burt was funny through little rubber balls across the hall. Team 5's turn to perform on the stage, I think this was about sound. It was funny that all the teachers in team 5 had a instrument and making a beat. This morning was a cool entertainment for the beginning of this term.

Sketchup by Iisa

There are many things you can use to make 3D items, but in Class 2 we use something called Sketchup. “What is Sketchup?” I hear you ask. Read on then!

Sketchup is a 3D designing programme. With it, you can make ANYTHING, you just have to put your mind to it. If you have a good design or something, to print it you send it to a 3D printer to be made.

Sketchup to me is special. Why? because with it you can make whatever you wish, although sometimes it gets real tough. But still, Sketchup is really cool. Believe me.

Okay, I know some of you who are reading this want to know what Sketchup is. Well, there’s a video tutorial at the end of this story. If you don’t want to watch it, then you may read on.

Shapes - You have the circle, square, and hexagon shapes.
Pencil - Draw straight lines.
Colour Bucket - Colour things in.
Selector - Select things to move, turn, duplicate or delete.
Rotating tool/Shift Pan - Move around your design.
Eraser - Erase any unwanted lines.

At this point you may be wondering “What is it used for?” Well... You can use it for making, creating, building, learning, and architecture. This is because it isn’t just for learning and those things. It’s also for creating modern-day things.

Like I said before, there are many things we can use to make 3D items, but I choose Sketchup. In case you never knew, I have used Sketchup for a few years.

Sketchup by Anthony

Sketchup is a 3D design programme which you can use on an imac, windows and netbooks. Sketchup
is a design program which you use to make 3 dimensional shapes. On this one program you can download it for free on an Imac. You can design toys, objects, or plastic clips for your lunch bag.

The people that use it are students, parents or teacher mostly anyone over the globe.  The year 7/8s from class 2 got the chance to use Sketchup for a project. My friends were creative on Sketchup. One of my friends was making a boat and the others were making cars.

People use Sketchup for buildings and ideas like cars, extensions to add onto houses, and houses. Sketchup is a programme where you can connect up to a 3D printer, but there are tools that you use to control it and see things from different angles. The tool’s on the 3D printer are special equipment which you will find at certain places.

You use shapes and combine them with other shapes and it creates a mixture between both of them. There is a special software which you can use to download objects to give you ideas of creating things you’ve never thought of before.

The Duffy Show by Jordenne

Yesterday afternoon we went to watch the book lover, he loves reading books and his name is Duffy. It was pretty cool but what I didn’t like the heat in the hall. Everyone was sweating but not as sweaty as the Duffy characters, Rosie, Duffy of course and Bingo the rugby player.

This show was about Duffies uncle Bingo who plays rugby but didn’t like reading, he said that Books aren’t his thing. But Rosie had a book that she wanted to give Bingo. So Duffy and Rosie tries to help him by making “The Best Book Ever” We had to make weird noises. Whenever Duffy opens the book we had to make that sound that he told us to make.

When they were done making the best book ever, Bingo came out from the bathroom finishing combing his hair and said “Oh I’m going now” He waved his hand in goodbye. “But wait!” shouted Duffy. “You have to come and read this book its called “The Best Book Ever” Bingo walked back in and stared at the book. Duffy slowly opened the book and suddenly they were all tangled up with madness.

All the noises we made was on them literally on them. The pirates was on them, the wild things and all the noises we made. In order to get them out we had make the sounds we did. On Duffy there was a spider on him and the spider is from the wild, so we made a snake sound “Ssssssssss” When he got out it was Rosies turn she had a pirate beside her. “Arrrrgggghhhh” we shouted. “Get off! Gett off! Theres a fly on me.” Bingo cried. But it was a dinosaur. “Aaaaaaah” Bingo got out and ran to the door and said “Thanks for…...thanks for uh whatever that was” And he ran to catch a cab and went straight to the airport to Sydney, Australia for his grand Finale.

Duffy and his friend Rosie were sad. They had nothing left to do. “Good evening Bingo” said the flight hostess. Bingo went to the plane and sat down. “Please fasten your seatbelt while on the flight. Thank you” said the flight attendant. Bingo was really bored, on his hand was a present wrapped in grey wrapping paper. “Oh whats that on your hand. Its grey, grey is my favourite colour. You should open it” said the fly hostess.

When the woman left Bingo decided to open the present. “Open it! Open it!!” His left arm shouted. “I am, I am just wait!” Bingo opened it and it was a book from Rosie. It was her favourite book and that book was about ballet. Bingo opened the book and started reading.

About a few hours later it was time for Bingos grand finale. “Turn on the TV!! Bingos on!” shouted Rosie. Duffy quickly ran to the Television and turned it on. On the TV Bingo was on it he was running he was passing the ball to his left and right and when he got the ball he started doing ballet. “What is he doing”??” Duffy asked. “He read my book! Bingo read my book!” shouted Rosie.

Bingo was doing a ballet dance while running for the try. He jumped up and twirled and scored for the try! The crowd goes wild! “Yeeeeaaaaah Bingo!” The camera men and the news reporter ran to Bingo and asked “How did you feel about that?” Bingo was so tired that he said “I feel awesome and that was all because of Rosie and Duffy” Rosie and Duffy were so happy. And now Bingo loves reading books. THE END!!

The 3P's by Iisa

Do you know the 3 P’s? In case you don’t know, I’ll tell you. They are Protection, Partnership, and Participation. This relates to the Treaty of Waitangi, and we use this at school. This is what the 3 P’s mean.

PROTECTION: Caring, looking after gear, being Cybersmart, stopping fights, looking after your netbook, and people if they get hurt. If people are harassing someone else, and you come in and defend them, then you’re protecting them. That’s another example of protection.

PARTNERSHIP: Being a real good team member, teamwork, unity, and much more. Our school’s Meet The Teacher and Home-school Partnership also have to do with partnership. It’s when the parents and teachers get up to date with the things happening at school.

PARTICIPATION: Our final P: Participation. It means giving everything a go, joining in, volunteering, and trying out for things, like sports teams, and fiafia groups. I may not know all the definitions of participation, but I know that it is the act of taking part or sharing in something.

And those are the 3 P’s, and what they mean.
