Visual Mihimihi

In term one, the Senior School learnt how to mihi in Maori and introduce ourselves appropriately in English (using the 'Language of Success'). We also created 'visual mihimihi' artwork to accompany our speeches (mihi). Each visual mihimihi had to have four parts to it:

1) A self portrait
2) A koru design that represents our whanau
3) A place of significance to us
4) A piece that represents our culture.

We also had to explain why we chose to draw the artwork/image and how it was significant to us. Those of us who spoke clearly and confidently, and memorised our mihi, scored well on our rubric. Take a look at some of our finished artworks and tell us what you think about them.

  1. Room 18- WOW!
I love this movie. Firstly its added something to have presenters explain the entire process (or the success criteria) and to have it on display at the start was wonderful. Follow that up with the students/artists themselves discussing their own work and this just works so well on many different levels. Wonderful work and a good idea that I might just borrow next term in my classroom!

  2. Hi Room 18. Your visual mihimihi are stunning. I can see you all reflected on your success criteria and found unique ways of achieving them. You have also used your skills to compose your mihimihi to showcase your artistic talents and personal pride.Your presenters spoke clearly and at a good pace.

  3. Fakaalofa Lahi Atu Room 18,
Your work is amazing. I liked how you explained what was important to you. It was great to see Xin Hao's panda and Blessing's animal (was it a goat?) in their pieces of art. I look forward to seeing more of your work on your blog.
